In the blink of an eye, I’m now in the last month of the nine-month long SGUS Video Editing programme with the Singapore Media Academy (SMA). Next month, my course mates and I will be parting ways and embarking on our new career paths.
Perhaps now would be the best time to pen down my thoughts of the course thus far. In years to come, I’m sure this piece will serve as a reminder for me, that regardless of age or background, it’s never too late to step into the unknown and pick up new skills.
In 2020, like the rest of the world, COVID-19 hit Singapore and severely affected our economy. The government subsequently launched the SGUnited Skills (SGUS) scheme to support those hoping to widen their skillsets and was a helpful initiative for freelancers hoping to deepen their knowledge in their respective industries. If you sign up for one of the many courses under the SGUS scheme, you’re given a monthly allowance, and at the same time, you learn a new skill, which may increase your chances of gaining employment.
The course was also designed for another group, mid-careerists, who are looking to move to a different industry altogether. Being in my late 30s, I belong to this group.
