MySkillsFuture is a one-stop portal, which enables you to make informed education and career choices, and empowers you for lifelong learning.

The portal is designed for individuals from Primary 5 to adulthood.

1. Primary 5 to Pre-University students will use the portal through structured classroom learning, as a tool for education and career exploration and planning.
2. Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Polytechnic and University students, national servicemen and adults will use the portal independently, supported by school and Education and Career Guidance (ECG) counsellors for career planning, building resilience and lifelong learning.
3. Employers will use the portal to reach job seekers, and access education and labour-market information to shape the training and development of their workforce.
4. Training Providers will use the portal to reach course seekers. This portal will enhance such providers’ knowledge on market trends to deliver customised and quality training.

If you are a student from Primary 5 to Pre-University, the portal is designed to help you discover your interests and strengths, and guide your education and career development at every stage of your education journey.

Prior to the launch of MySkillsFuture, ecareers.sg was the portal used to support ECG lessons in schools.

Compared to ecareers.sg, MySkillsFuture for Students allows students to continue to have access to ECG resources and build their education and career eportfolio across different life stages. It contains new features such as an enhanced occupations database, interactive avatar for Primary school students to learn about industries and jobs and reflection questions that will enable students to consolidate their learning while exploring the portal.

MySkillsFuture for Students (Pre-University) is designed to facilitate ECG for Pre-University students.

The focus of ECG at the Pre-University level is for you to crystalize your career self-concept and to make well-informed decisions and education and career plans.

Designed to support ECG lessons, the portal will enable you to:

• Develop awareness of your Career Interests, Skills Confidence, Work Values and Learning Styles
• Explore and learn more about different careers in the World of Work
• Prepare for education and career plans for the next stage

The portal is designed to bring you through the education and career planning process. You will be able to learn about your career interests, skills, work values and learning styles through interactive tools. You will be able to tap into a database of occupations and information on educational institutions and courses to facilitate your education and career planning.

When you are not logged into your MySkillsFuture for Students account, you can only browse and search for industry, job and school information.

When you log in to the portal, you are able to access more features such as viewing information you have browsed and saved as favourites on My ePortfolio, using the four tools in Know Yourself and recording your results on My Profile.

My Profile and My ePortfolio provide you with a structured way to update, track and consolidate your personal information such as abilities, skills, knowledge, qualities, talents, and achievements in school and beyond school.

Using My Profile, you can update and track your personal information such as interests, skills, values, learning styles, achievements and activities in school and beyond school.

Using My ePortfolio, you can view your saved favourites. These include industries, job roles, education pathways, educational institutions, courses, events and articles. You can also view your goals, reflections, resumes, cover letters and references in My ePortfolio.

The structure and process of using My ePortfolio will help you understand yourself better when you engage in the process of education and career exploration and planning. The system is designed in a user-friendly manner that allows you to have an overview of the content within My Profile and My ePortfolio.

You can download and print My Profile and My ePortfolio in a print-friendly format.

You can use the portal for up to six months (until 30 June in the following year) after you leave the MOE school system (Primary, Secondary or Pre-University school). You can download and save soft copies of My ePortfolio during this period. Thereafter, your account will be deactivated.

You can choose to transfer your information over to MySkillsFuture (Adults and Tertiary Students Account) when you graduate from Pre-University.

With My Goals, you can take charge of your education and career development by planning your next steps forward. In this goal setting module, you will be guided to set both academic and non-academic goals.

• Know Yourself helps you to learn more about your career interests, skills, work values and learning styles. It also provides relevant industry and job role information that matches your profile to support your exploration of education and career options.
  
  
• My Reflections contains guiding questions and allows you to pen your reflections as you use different features in the portal. For example, you will find My Reflections after taking the tool under Know Yourself. This helps you to record your thoughts and set goals for further career and education planning.
  
  
• Prepare for Work provides you with tools that help you to create resumes, cover letters and references, and prepare for your interviews.
  
  
  • My Resumes guides you in creating a resume, in chronological, functional or combination format. You can use your created resume for job applications or apply for school admissions.
  • My Cover Letters allows you to create a cover letter for school applications and job applications.
  • My References allows you to create a database of references that you can use in your school or job applications.
  • Interview Skills equips you with tips to plan and prepare for your interview. You can learn about dos and don’ts before, during and after an interview.

You can use Know Yourself to discover more about your career interests, skills, work values and learning styles through four tools. These tools enable you to discover different aspects of yourself and facilitate your exploration of job roles, industries and courses.

World of Work allows you to explore over 1000 job roles and 31 associated industries, via Learn About Job Roles and Singapore Industry Landscape.

Several theories prove useful for providing career guidance to students and adults, but few are as well researched or practical as that of Dr. John L. Holland and Dr.  Donald E. Super. For that reason, their theories have been adopted as the basis for the Career Interests, Skills Confidence and Work Values tools found in Know Yourself.

The Dunn and Dunn Learning Styles model has been adopted as the basis for the Learning Styles tool in Know Yourself.

Dr. Holland’s theory can be summarised in four statements:

• The personalities of individuals can be described as a composite of several types from the six personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional
• Environments (including occupations, specific jobs, programmes of study, and leisure activities) can be described as a combination of the same six types
• Individuals of a given type are attracted by environments of the same or similar type
• Placing an individual in an environment of the same type, or one very similar to the individual’s own type is likely to bring satisfaction to the individual and benefits to an employer

Dr. Super’s career development theory and research on work values can be summarised in four statements.

• It explores the values a person would like to realise through work in the various stages of career development 
• Super’s 15 work values have been revised by Zytowski (2009) to include 12 value facets:
  Achievement, Challenge, Co-workers, Creativity, Income, Independence, Lifestyle, Prestige, Security, Supervision, Workplace and Variety
• Considering one’s work values adds to the different sources of information to help one make informed career-related decisions
• Values clarification exercise often involves ranking one’s preferences of these values to provide opportunity to discuss career-related issues

Dunn and Dunn Learning Styles model can be summarised in three statements:

• Individuals may have a preferred means of gathering, processing, and retaining new and/or difficult information, and connect with learning
• The learning styles of individuals are ranked according to: Auditory, Kinaesthetic, Tactile, Visual Intake Level, Light Level, Mobility, Sound Level, Learning Setting, Time of Day, Independent, Motivation, Open Learning, Focus, and Teacher Motivation.
• Raising one’s awareness of the various learning styles may help individuals improvise their study plan as well as build up a repertoire of learning strategies

The pedagogy of MySkillsFuture for Students is to provide features and functions that will effectively facilitate students’ exploration of education and career pathways and guide them in making informed decisions and education and career plans.

When students are aware that their interests, skills and work values can be applied in a number of viable career options, they are more likely to be adaptive in making successful transitions to further education and work.

MySkillsFuture for Students empowers students to achieve this by providing them with:

• Increased self/career awareness
• Knowledge on the range of possible education and career pathways available to them
• Greater confidence in making informed choices and managing their education and career plans

MySkillsFuture for Students supports the three stages of the Education and Career Guidance (ECG) Developmental Model. The ECG Developmental Model is a framework that guides schools in programming developmentally appropriate ECG activities for students at different levels. The model highlights education and career development as a process that takes place over one’s life span, with three progressive emphases of Awareness, Exploration and Planning.

The first stage is Awareness, where students discover more about their interests and strengths, and build their awareness of the wide array of occupations in the world of work.

The second stage is Exploration, where students explore the portal and learn information related to different occupations and education options. This exploration provides them with a better understanding of the educational qualifications they will need, in order to pursue their education and career goals.

The third stage is Planning, where students build up their profiles and portfolios according to their education and career goals. They can also pick up relevant skills such as cover letter and resume writing, and interview skills.

The RIASEC codes are generated based on the O*Net online platform for job information in the United States. These RIASEC codes have been localised and contextualised to suit occupations in Singapore. Local occupations are analysed and matched to the US equivalent on O*Net from which the RIASEC codes are based. Having been validated through in-depth studies and tests, the RIASEC codes provide insight into each job role while providing best matches to each individuals’ job preference.
